This week I got block finished up by putting a helcoil gard insert. Both tasks challenged me to learn new things I had never done before. I started by inserting a gard by first making a pilot hole all the way through, then making a hole the correct size. By doing this I leaned how to make a very accurate hole that is perfectly on spot. The pilot hole is smaller then the intended hole size it just helps with making bigger holes with accuracy. Then I continued by making a counter bore, by doing so I learned how to make a hole that is big enough so that you can make threads in the hole but you only want to drill down so that the gard insert still fits, the counter bore is just a guide or a way to make sure your threads are straight. Then inserted the helcoil with the special tool, then I made sure the bolt fit perfectly. By doing this I learned how to insert a helcoil.
Making the counter bore
Next thing I did was insert the gard. This was a lot simpler but I still learned a lot. I started by finding the right drill pit size by going on the gard spec website. Then I again made a pilot hole followed by the right size hole which was 17/32. By doing this I learned how to install this drill pit into the drill press, then making a bigger hole with accuracy. The next step I learned how to insert a gard by screwing parshally a grade A bolt onto it with a new nut. Then taking a wrench and screwing it into the hole making sure the the side that cuts into the hole is on the right side. Finished product....
