Organizing the service board

At my new job I'm responsible for all the truck services and two week inspections. And to keep everything organized we have a board where we mark the service information with the dates and up coming fixs that will be needed on a truck, and of course millage. Here is a picture showing the service board. 

All the truck numbers are on the far left along with the driver names. Then with a different color for each month we have the service day and the millage that we did the service on. This company likes to do a service every 10 thousand miles and an inspection every two weeks. The date is marked the latest time the truck was in the shop for example if I did an inspection today i'd mark today's date on the board. And then on a separate piece of paper write down all the repairs and all the work you did to the unit. 

Changing a water pump

This week I started my new job at tc trans. At first I did a lot of services and brake jobs. But on Monday I got the chance to dig into a mercedes engine to replace the water pump. For this I had to take off the hood of he truck, drain the coolant, take off the fan, take off all the hoses, air to air, and clutch ensemble, belt, and tensoner. And I had never done any of that before. So what did I learn? I leanred how to desasemble all of those parts. I spent around 6 hours taking all of that off. Here are some pictures....

Drained the coolant

Used gloves so dirt wouldn't go inside and contaminate.

Took hoses off. 

Notice how all the hoses are off of that part. I took off a lot more hoses later on.

Took the fan off. The radiator is just sitting there all of the nuts and bolts holding it are out. 

Removed tensioner and water pump. Coolant leaked everywhere....

What I leanred, is not to drop the water pump because that will damage the radiator... Not good...

Stacking tires

This week I got the opportunity to learn how to operate an excavator. First, I went through the service manual to look at all the saftey measures that I should be aware of. After that I got a chance to practice by stacking tires. This was very helpful I got familiar with all the controls and how they worked. Here is a picture of a stack I did... 

This thought be control and attention to detail. As well as figuring out a game plan before attempting to do something. My plan with stacking tires was to grab the tire from the out sides and with the thumb. And to stack all the bigger tires on the bottom and smaller ones on top. 

Hydraulic boards

This week I did a lot of work on the hydraulic boards and making different mecunizums function. Here is a picture of a practice project...

As you can see the on the top the pump is pushing the rod out. By doing this I leanred how all the systems work such as the drain, pump, oil pressures, and how to know that there is something going through the holes. 

Paper work

At work we have to do a lot of paper work on the work we good, service sheets, parts request forms, logging hours, etc... Here is an example of paper work that I did...

This form describes what I did. I serviced a truck and wrote down some details. Then below wrote all the parts I used. By doing this I leanred how to describe what I did with a few words and to keep track of all the parts i used so the parts department can bill the customer. Then later I had another mechanic check all my work (Cobby) so that I knew everything was good. Here is a picture of some more paper work... 

This is a trailer service sheet. From this service I leanred how to inspect all parts under the trailer and where to write down that the trailer is in need of repair. Here is a truck service sheet. 

This service was down all by me I leanred how to organize my self and maintain a updated service sheet so that if my foreman needs to come check up on where I'm at he can just look at te service sheet. 

Hydraulics

Today in class I leanred a little bit about hydraulics. And when I went to work I had the chance to work hands on with some hydraulics. I worked on a rolled over forklift. Here are some pictures....

My assignment was to take off the cab. Which means I had to disconnect all the hydraulic fittings going to the controls to use the forks on the forklift. In class I leanred a lot about saftey measures that I need to consider while working with hydraulics. I leanred that if the fluid gets shot into your skin and you don't go to the doctors quick you can start to say bye to some fingers maybe even a hand. Here is a picture of my work....

 

If you notice I used colored zip ties to make sure I know where all the hoses go if I need to reinstall them. Then I bleed out all the fluid into a pan. From this I leanred about safety when working with hydraulics and how to distinguish which line goes where by color coding, and then a good way to empty out the lines. In the last picture you can notice I also cut the coolant hoses and I drained all the coolant into a pan. 

After I was done with my part of the project I was told to put new brakes on a trailer. Here is a picture...

I put on new brake shoes and a drum. Then adjusted the slacks on both sides of the axle so that the slack is at 1.25 inches. 

Beginning electrical

This week I leanred a lot about open HRVD and short electrical problems that can occur. Using electrical boards and hands on experience I leanred how to distinguish open or short circuit problems. On the back of a truck the right brake light was not working there was a short in the system. I fixed the light by replacing it and the problem was resolved.
